Keeping It Fun

Just getting back from a two week hiatus on the beach for spring break. It was a much needed vacation. There’s something to be said about bare footing it and listening to the sound of the ocean waves morning, noon, and night.

Getting back into the swing of the things we want to keep it fun! The boys are steering the learning ship and picked some exploratory topics for the next month. On top of our base curriculum model, we will also be researching the Roman Empire, Greek God’s & Goddesses, Celtics, Greece, Civil War, & the Underground Railroad.

We have picked up some great books from our public library:

These books are very interesting. We will be learning about female spies and great women during the Civil War. The Civil War By Numbers book tells the story by only using numerical value and various different types of charts, percentages, and graphs. The boys will have a series of questions to answer based on their grade level and their readings that day. These questions will be focusing on recognition of types of graphs, comparing graphs, calculating percentages, and answering a series of math equations based on their findings.

I am very impressed with how this year has went so far. During my assessments a couple of weeks back, I realized we have hit every standard this year and the boys are far exceeding their academic grade levels.

I am still including games in our everyday learing practices. This week’s homemade games include: Fractions matching, Fraction/Decimal matching, and Analog/digital time matching games. A little tedious to make by hand but when printers mess up we must improvise.

Here are some pics of my homemade games:

The boys have also been reading up a storm. My oldest is on the last book in the Harry Potter series (he typically doesn’t like these types of books, but was comparing them to the movies). My 10 year old is reading the Percy Jackson series and my 7 year old is reading The Diary of A Wimpy Kid series (very impressed with his accelerated reading these past few months).

I am planning well ahead and thinking about what summer adventures we will be having, and even preparing well in advance for the 2016-2017 school year.

What adventures are you planning for the summer? Do you continue to do school work?

Look forward to hearing from you!
