Suprises Are Everywhere

Have you ever heard your child say something that caught you off guard? It’s actually an amazing experience! First, you’re like, “wait, what did you say?” Then it hits you…your kid HAS been listening to you! They HAVE been learning and they HAVE been thinking for themselves.
These my friends are my favorite times. The times that give validity to what I am trying to do. The times I feel I’m failing, the times it seems like an uphill struggle. Homeschooling.Works.
Everyday I try to facilitate what my children want to be. I try to give them every resource possible. I also try to enable them to not only look at things at face value, but from different perspectives.
Every piece of history, every article we read, and lesson we learn we compare and contrast with multiple websites, and multiple resources before making a decision on what we believe is true.
I believe this is building their self confidence in knowing that THEY found the information themselves and they are responsible in doing so.
I have watched the behaviors of children the same ages that my children are and mine are different. All three have this level of confidence when speaking with adults that I think is amazing. I can remember at certain times in my life when I was afraid to speak to an adult and tell them what I was wanting to say. I don’t see that with my children.
I am surprised by their ability to navigate through conversations with people in our daily lives. I am also surprised by their ability to profile people.
When I was young I was told not to question adults, and I don’t agree with that mind set. There is a difference between questioning and being disrespectful. It can be a thin line, because most adults view children as “children”.
Doesn’t it strike you odd that children are made to follow directives? I am not saying that a child shouldn’t know how to follow orders, but only following directives with a path already paved out bugs me. My children can follow their own path. Question everything, seek the answers, and make evidence based decisions.
Suprises are everywhere, they are in their stories, they are in their conversations, they are in their mannerisms, and they are in their behaviors. These my friends are my favorite times. Watching, waiting, and planning for greatness.
