This week we are studying cultural diversity and the meaning of immigration. Scholastic’s website has a great interactive tour that we will be looking over this week and also learning about the stories of young immigrants.
Our trip starts at Ellis Island while taking a tour & learning about the journey across the ocean. Writing activities follow with prompts about how we would feel traveling to a new land and the possibility of one of our family members being detained or even worse sent back to their home country.
On top of our core math studies we will be analyzing data on immigration: immigration by decade and immigration by region. Scholastic has a list of questions to answer from the data listed below, as well as, some group activities.

To look deeper into the numbers you can download the whole data here:
We are also looking into to school lunches around the world. School lunches have definitely evolved since I was in schools, but I don’t know if they have evolved for the better. Processed foods are on the rise in schools and it is great to know that my children are able to eat healthier options at home. Obviously children that attend public/private school systems have the ability to pack lunches. It is interesting to me to see school lunches across the world so I couldn’t help myself in showing the children. This video gives an interesting perspective.
How do you bring cultural diversity into your homeschooling programs? Thanks to technology we have the ability to learn about cultures, traditions, and experience different stories right from our homes.
I strive to teach my children to be open minded, embrace differences, and love everyone.
Thanks!
